Peabody Islington Estate
Historic estate in North London with reanimated landscape spaces and rain gardens
2011-14 Peabody/Sprunt Architects
This project involved regenerating the outdoor spaces on this historic estate in the London Borough of Islington. Completed in 1865, these Grade II Listed buildings stand as the earliest surviving example of a Peabody estate. The objective was to enhance the estate’s appeal by creating a high-quality external environment that complements its historically significant buildings. The environmental enhancements included planting new trees, extensive herbaceous perennial planting, shared paved surfaces, stone seating elements, and natural play spaces.
Sustainable drainage was a crucial aspect of the project. To slow the flow of surface water across the predominantly hard-paved areas of the estate, a series of rain gardens were introduced. This natural irrigation system not only minimised maintenance requirements but also enhanced biodiversity on the estate. The project was developed in consultation with the residents of the estate, with the aim of providing more community facilities and opportunities for socialising with neighbours. Additionally, new natural play spaces were created for young children, providing safe and secure areas for doorstep play.
