Heritage park restoration
Heritage Lottery restoration of historic Victorian Park in East London
2006-10 London Borough of Newham/Sprunt Architects
This project, funded by the Heritage Lottery, involved the restoration of a popular Victorian park in East London. The park’s vision was rooted in the original design principles of adaptability, robustness, inclusiveness, wonder, and celebration that made these places so successful. The detailed designs for the park successfully balanced the crucial requirements for heritage conservation with the needs of a contemporary park in a bustling urban setting. The London Borough of Newham oversaw the project, which also involved a successful Stage 2 application for Heritage Lottery funding. Landscape design services were provided as part of a team while working for Sprunt Architects.
The team consulted with experts to develop proposals for restoring the park’s historical infrastructure, including the various garden areas, the memorial, the existing path network, and the existing trees. The plan includes a forest garden for children, a redesigned formal garden employing contemporary planting methods, a new contemplative garden as a setting for the war memorial, and a refurbished café at the park’s centre. Throughout the process, the local community was actively involved to gather feedback, explore new ideas, and interpret the park’s historical significance. An artist played a crucial role in defining the park’s heritage in innovative and captivating ways.
