Play area in the park

This project, which originated from an international RIBA competition, transformed a playground in a suburban park in Altrincham. Urban Splash, Trafford Council, and Groundwork collaborated to organise the competition and deliver the playground with TEP. Our entry emerged as the winning design. Our objective was to design an original play space that harmonised with the natural themes of the park setting. The play area is defined by a sinuous river-like loop that winds through the majestic trees and rolling landscape of the park. This looping path connects a series of play installations inspired by natural landscape features. The playground is inclusive and safe for children of all ages.

The play installations were designed to connect with the natural surroundings, inspiring children to contemplate their environment encompassing mountains, hills, valleys, forests, rivers, lakes, and meadows. The play features are arranged in a loop, encouraging children to use their imagination to create various games, journeys, and stories. The Play Hills feature a slide and a rope bridge. The River Eddies incorporate spinners and roundabouts. The River Crossing presents balancing beams, balancing blocks, and a seesaw. The Pole Forest offers climbing poles, bars, loops, and nets.

Each installation has a unique character, offering diverse social spaces that cater to children of varying ages. This allows them to explore different parts of the play area simultaneously. The equipment is selected to accommodate a wide range of age groups, seamlessly blending simple and accessible elements with more challenging play opportunities. The materials and colours harmonise with the existing landscape, ensuring they complement the park’s natural beauty without overpowering the views.
