Integrated habitat design competition
Shortlisted competition entry for urban greening in Soho
2012-15 IHDC
This project explored innovative approaches to introducing plants and habitats into densely populated urban areas. We envisioned a year-long program of novel installations, activities, and events aimed at fostering habitat creation within a city district like Soho. Our project was recognised as a finalist in the ‘best creative design project’ category of the 2012 Integrated Habitat Design Competition. Although it didn’t secure the top spot, our entry was showcased in an exhibition at the Natural History Museum. Subsequently, we engaged in collaborative efforts with other designers, community groups, and local authorities. Notably, we collaborated with Groho on an idea for a green wall at the Prince Edward Theatre on Greek Street.
We explored the physical possibilities of planting in a dense urban structure and how to achieve this through widespread engagement. This involved enhancing traditional greening methods like window boxes, pub displays, and street planters around restaurants. Additionally, we celebrated pioneer species that thrive in the cracks and imperfections of the built environment. We also considered the potential for more artistic pop-up green installations to capture attention and engage people. Our goal was to create a vibrant and diverse natural landscape that complemented the unique urban character and street life of Soho.
